Conexión San Ángelo/ Staff report

SAN ANGELO–At approximately 2:21 a.m. this morning, San Angelo Police were dispatched to the 900 block of West Avenue D for the report of a motor vehicle crash with a disabled vehicle in the Sulphur Draw.

Officers arrived and located the vehicle resting on the embankment across from their location and fresh damage to a guard rail. Officers were unable to access the vehicle and responded to a secondary location behind the 500 block of South Park.

Officers climbed down the embankment and located a male driver who had no signs of life.  San Angelo Fire Department Medics responded to the scene along with Justice of the Peace, Judge J.P. McGuire, who pronounced the man deceased on impact by blunt force trauma to the head and chest.  Personnel from the Department’s Crime Scene Investigations Unit and Criminal Investigations Division also responded.

The vehicle, a white Ford F450 Pickup, was pulled from the embankment by Home Motors. The 31-year-old male driver and sole occupant required extrication.  The name of the deceased is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

Evidence at the scene suggests the driver was traveling west on W. Avenue D at a high rate of speed when it entered the parking lot of the Park 700 Condominiums, struck the guard rail and became airborne.  The truck traveled approximately 45 feet before coming to rest on the opposing embankment of Sulphur Draw. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality responded at the request of officers due to concern about a diesel leak from the truck’s ruptured fuel tank.

The cause of the collision is still under investigation.
