AUSTIN, TX – A federal judge has ruled against the Trump Administration’s decision to end deportation protections for some young immigrants, saying the White House was “arbitrary and capricious” in moving to end the Obama-era DACA program. [Houston Public Radio, April 25 2018]

Texas Democratic Party Chair Gilberto Hinojosa Issued the Following Statement:

“The judicial branch has rejected Trump’s cruel and unconstitutional actions, but the fight for DACA is not over. It’s time for the Trump Administration to immediately begin accepting new DACA applications. It’s time for Congress to pass a clean DREAM act now and permanently protect immigrant youth. And it’s time for new leadership.

“Texas should be leading the nation in defining the immigration experience, but instead the Texas Republican establishment and indicted Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton is leading the attack on DREAMers and the immigrant community. Now more than ever, we need leaders, like Texas Democrat Justin Nelson and the entire Democratic slate, who’ll defend the rights of every Texan.

“Texas is stronger because of more than 124,000 DACA recipients and the entire immigrant community. For so many Dreamers, America is the only country they have ever called home. They are Texans, and their lives are not political bargaining chips.”

Timeline of Greg Abbott’s and Ken Paxton’s attacks on DACA:

·  November 2014 – Greg Abbott and Texas Republicans led the opposition against Obama’s DAPA immigration actions, which would have protected the undocumented parents of U.S. citizens and permanent residents from deportation and allowed them to work legally.

·  June 2017 – Paxton lead 10 Republican state Attorneys General in threatening to amend their pending DAPA lawsuit to sue over DACA 2012, unless President Trump ended the program by September 5, 2017.

·  January 2018 – In an amicus brief filed with the Supreme Court, Ken Paxton stated that if the DACA program still existed in June, his office would consider filing suit to eliminate the program.
