SAN ANGELO–This week kicked-off the P-16+ Education Partnership as College Goal Week got underway with five academic locations participating, among them was Central High School.

At CHS Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 18, six counselors, plus other school representatives, were on hand to assist graduating seniors who were looking for ways to pay for their college education.

CHS Counselor, Marcie Featherston, assisting senior, Jose Duran, who was accompanied by his mother, Christi Acevedo.

Central held the CGW event in the Eva Tucker Hall Room, 109, between 4:00-7:00 p.m. Conexión interviewed two counselors, Amy Rutherford and Marcie Featherston who informed us on what was involved.
"This is a community-wide initiative to help students and parents fill out what can be a complex free application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for college planning," Rutherford said. "There is a online process involved of obtaining an I.D. entering a student's basic require information, including IRS tax documents, Social Security, etc."

Featherston followed up, saying the students had to establish an account first; once all the information is submitted, the turnaround time to receive a response as to whether the senior qualifies for financial aid in the way of a scholarship, grants or loans through the FAFSA program is within a two-week period.

Other counselors on hand to assist seniors with any questions or assisting them through the process were representatives from Lake View High School, Howard College and Angelo State University.

Jesse Gutiérrez, CHS senior, said the application process for him was going fairly easy and it was user friendly to do.

The CGW started this past Monday, Oct. 17 when it was held at Howard College Student Services Building Library/ and also at Lake View High School Library from 4-:00-7:00 p.m.

The P-16+ Education Partnership continues on Wednesday, Oct. 19 from 4:00-7:00 p.m at ASU, in the Computer Science Bldg, Computer Lab 111.

It concludes on Thursday, Oct. 20 where it will be held at TLCA Annex Building, also scheduled from 4:00-7:00 p.m.
