SAN ANGELO – Prior to Saturday’s 2 p.m. commencement speaker, Dr. U. Shivraj Sohur’s speech, Angelo State University President, Dr. Brian May, stated that the class of 2017 had something in common with him as he also graduated from ASU in 1992.

Dr. Sohur is a clinician at the Internal Medicine Research Unit of Pfizer Inc.’s Worldwide Research and Development in Cambridge, Mass.

Dr. Sohur’s speech focused on the theme of faith in humanity. The following is an excerpt from his message as he spoke to more than 950 students at the 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. graduation spring commencement ceremonies held in the Junell Center/Stephens Arena.

“The greatest gift Texas and ASU has given me is to have faith in humanity.” “Our faith in humanity is the beating heart of our American exceptionalism which provides our nation’s confidence, for our abounding optimism, pragmatism, kindness, generosity and patience with others in adversity.”

“Our hearts can be broken, our faith in humanity can be jolted in despair.” But as a nation, our faith in humanity endures and has never been destroyed.”

Dr. Sohur concluded by saying that faith in oneself is at the heart of American individualism and a precondition to have faith in humanity.”

Alana Auburn Edgin, graduated with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

Among the graduates at Saturday's 2 p.m. commencement ceremonies was Kara Ann Martinez., summa cum laude (3.90-4.0). Martinez received her College of Business/ Marketing Degree.

Kara is surrounded by her three sisters, all graduates of ASU (another sister, Tricia was unable to attend) and proud parents: Richard and Anna Martinez. Anna informed Conexión that this was the best Mother's Day weekend gift, to see her daughter graduate from ASU.
Kara's sisters were so proud to see their little sister graduate. Miss Martinez was asked how did it feel to hold up the legacy of following in her sister's footsteps and also graduate from ASU. "It feels good, I'm glad I didn't let anyone down."
Kara's next goal is enrolling in the Master's program this coming summer.

Brandon Shane Allen graduated from the Master of Security Studies program in 18 months.
