SAN ANGELO—Restaurants around San Angelo and students from Lake View’s JROTC program came together to provide a family friendly, food-filled night for the community.

Tuesday night, the Restaurant Association hosted the 41st Annual Taste of San Angelo. The event is meant to celebrate the dining variety that San Angelo has to offer, as well as benefit the culinary programs in the Concho Valley.

“One of the things that many teenagers never have the opportunity to do, is interact with adults…” Major Harris, JROTC instructor said “We have over 60 Cadets, and they’re here on their own time. They love serving the community. This was a fantastic opportunity for us, so we are so thankful that the Restaurant Association remembers us every year.”

Harris said that she believes students working in and for the community sets a great example for others to get involved. Her Cadets feel excited and proud to serve for their community.

“It’s just nice to give back to the community that gives so much to us…” David Moreno, a senior and JROTC colonel at Lake View said, “So anywhere we can, we’re helping out. And in turn these people sponsor some of our trips.”

Restaurants around town work with the JROTC program every year and function under a similar philosophy.

“[Events like these] support the community, the money raised from this event also goes to support several programs around town…” Rusty Swanson, owner of Rooster’s Chicken and Fixins said, “We do the events for several reasons. We do them to allow San Angelo to come in and the Restaurants can showcase the things that they have, make a great night out for families. We think that it really brings the community together.”

Mr. Swanson believes that this event has an important impact on the community because of the support and unity it ushers.
