Conexión San Ángelo/ Staff report

SAN ANGELO – There will be a ribbon cutting ceremony and Open House for the Elta Joyce Murphey McAfee Performance Hall Tuesday, October 3, at 4 p.m. at the restored, renovated and expanded auditorium in San Angelo City Hall.

The event is free and the public is invited to attend and tour the facility.

The City Auditorium has been closed since 2009. Improvements include restoration of the historic facility, new seating, a 17,000 square foot back-of-the-house addition, expansion of restroom facilities, state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, and restoration of the original 1929 curtain.

The $16-plus million project was a joint effort by the City of San Angelo and the San Angelo Performing Arts Coalition, with total funding of $5.25 million from City of San Angelo Development Corporation, hotel occupancy funds of $1.25 million, and additional city investment of $1.25 million. Additionally, $3 million in support came from Elta Joyce Murphey, an expected $2.7 million from Texas historic franchise tax credits, along with more than $2 million from fundraising efforts led by the San Angelo Performing Arts Coalition including several foundation grants.

The Performing Arts Campus project was created to enable the renovation and expansion of the City Auditorium as well as the adaptive reuse of an adjacent 44,000 square foot Coca-Cola bottling plant building.

City Auditorium, which opened in 1929, has been renamed the Murphey Performance Hall at City Auditorium thanks to a generous gift from Elta Joyce Murphey McAfee. It will reopen with the first San Angelo Symphony performance of the 2017-2018 season on Saturday, October 7, 2017.

Thanks to an additional $10 million of fund raising by the San Angelo Performing Arts Coalition, the former Coca-Cola bottling plant has been adapted for new use and renamed The Stephens Performing Arts Center. It is the home to the San Angelo PAC management staff as well as the Ballet San Angelo staff. It houses the Brooks & Bates Theatre, a Black Box Performance Space, theatre shops, and several Ballet San Angelo academy studios.
