SAN ANGELO – The 4th Annual Giant Pumpkin Weigh-in and Pumpkin Festival was held Thursday, November 2 sponsored by The People/Plant Connection. Each spring, the organization distributes two Dills Atlantic Giant Pumpkin seeds to anyone who wants to try their hand at growing the pumpkins. While there wasn’t a record breaker, there were some very big pumpkins, unique shapes and beautifully colored pumpkins entered. The winning pumpkin weighed 71.6 pounds and was grown by Carl Lange. He also had the second-place pumpkin weighing in at 64 pounds. The third-place pumpkin weighed in at 45 and was grown by Beth Smith. Velma Knox’s pumpkin won the Judges Choice due to its unusual colors. After the announcement, winners shared their secrets of success with attendees.

This was the first year the organization had a pumpkin pie contest with their Pumpkin Festival. There were five entries. Winners of the pie contest were: First place, Deanna Lange, second place, Jana Jenkins and third place was Alvin Owens. A few attendees judged the pie contest and after the announcement of the winners, all attendees were able to taste the delicious entries.

The People/Plant Connection is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization whose mission is to bring the joy of gardening to people of all ages and abilities by building an educational garden at the Southside Rec Center. The Giant Pumpkin Contest is one way they can encourage gardeners in the Concho Valley to get outdoors and enjoy growing giant pumpkins. All proceeds from the entries go toward their garden project. Watch for their free seed distribution next spring and try your hand at growing giant pumpkins.
