SAN ANGELO – Performers from Ballet San Angelo have been in ongoing rehearsals since mid-September for the children’s favorite, The Nutcracker by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, set to make its debut at the Murphey Performance Hall for four scheduled upcoming performances.

Sandra Miller, Ballet San Angelo Artistic Director, was interviewed by Conexión in her office which was located in the San Angelo Performing Arts Center.

The Nutcracker, a two-act ballet which began in 1892, is still very popular after 125 years ago when it debuted. Miller was asked why?

“Because children love it, the characters, imagination.” “It is a charming story that has something in it for every age range,” said Miller.

Even though Miller has been involved with this classic ballet production, this will be her first time to choreograph The Nutcracker; her interpretation on the story is a little bit different than the traditional version.

“There is a little more connection between the acts, there is a little more psychological element in tying the characters together,” said Miller.

One slight difference in Miller’s presentation, hinges on Clara’s interpretation. “The child, Clara, and her Nutcracker, become the adult, Clara and the Nutcracker, Cavalier, in the second act for me, is not the land of the sweets, which is actually a dream sequence.”

As for the performers who will play some of the major characters---Clara’s character is played by Nico Covington, Droselmeyer is Nicholas Dietrick, the Nutcracker Prince is Michael Sherrod, Sugar Plum Clara is Mallie McNeill and the Rat King is Nicholas Dietrick.

Over the weekend, The Nutcracker unveiled three new backdrops for the first time on Sunday, December 10th at 1:30 p.m. They currently hang in The Murphey Performance Hall in preparation for the 35th annual production of The Nutcracker. Miller stated at the time of the interview that there would also be new costumes.
