SAN ANGELO – It’s amazing how a lot of hard work and some elbow grease will get the attention of a foundation that showed up Monday afternoon to award Lake View Mariachi Band Director, Rosendo Ramos, and the Lake View and Lincoln Middle School Marachi programs a check for $,1500.

“El Puente Foundation” Director, Sara Giddings, Assistant Director, Jason Fernandez, accompanied by Mayor, Brenda Gunter, and Downtown San Angelo Inc., Executive Director, Del Velasquez, appeared at Lake View’s campus yesterday at 5 p.m. to make the check presentation to Ramos and two of his Mariachi band students, Belen Hernandez and Noah Rochester.

Giddings informed Conexión how Lake View ended up being the recipient of the generous donation. “We hosted an art show called Latino Colores where we showcased various artists. It was from that event that proceeds were selected to give to the Mariachi program that represents a connection of cultures as our beneficiary.”

Mariachi Band Director, Ramos was informed of the good news on the donation by assistant director, Fernandez.  “I was very excited as this is a great opportunity.” For them to give us that amount was very exciting.”

As for what the plans are for the $1,500. “We have our spring trip coming up where we will be taking our 49 high school Mariachi students to South Padre Island for a three-day UIL competition, scheduled for April 20-22,” said Ramos. The money will also be used for instruments that need repair such as strings being replaced.

“For me it’s a little bit eye-opening because receiving that much money from a foundation, it means we are finally getting our name out there,” said Mariachi Band member, Noah Rochester, a sophomore. “Maybe we will be the first Mariachi to win a Grammy!”

El Puente’s mission is to bring together different cultures through the art through paintings, photography, culinary arts, music to bridge the gap that has existed between the different cultures.
