SAN ANGELO – Legal Aid of North West Texas’ town hall meeting, held last week at St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church was for several reasons, according to LANWT, Managing Attorney, Lexi Wiley.

“Our office periodically does legal needs assessment as the branch office goes out in the community to get information from stakeholders, clients, and interested parties on what the legal needs are.” “And feedback on how well we are addressing those needs,” said Wiley.

Far left-to-right: Elizabeth Rodriguez, Mary Mendoza, Joyce Lowe, and Lexi Wiley are all Legal Aid employees while Melody Lane, who is wearing the blue shirt, is with the Salvation Army.

Once that information is gathered from the meeting, it will be turned in to their administrative office in Fort Worth, Texas, followed by a report which is then given to Legal Aid’s funders. Eventually it will become a strategic plan with a goal to improve services and tailor Legal Aid’s services to the needs of its clients.

At LANWT’s February 1 meeting, 15 individuals representing agencies: Texas Inmate Family Association (TIFA), The Family Shelter ICD, Tom Green County Justice of the Peace, Christian Job Corp., Angelo State University, NAACP Unit 6219, Concho Valley Turning Point, Texas Star/ Maximus, Inc., Area Agency on Aging, Texas Health Steps, Disabled Americans Veterans (DAV) and Salvation Army attended the two-hour meeting.

One of those attendees was TCG Justice of the Peace, Susan Werner. JP Warner, stated that one major concern she heard about was that it was always difficult to get through to Legal Aid.

“All of our phones are linked to a computer system, and if it rains, our server goes down, so there have been challenges getting through,” said Wiley.

Regarding feedback from those agencies, Legal Aid handed out a survey that consisted of eight questions; one of those was “How can LANWT better serve your constituency?”
