SAN ANGELO – The 5th annual West Texas Hunger Summit, presented by The Texas Hunger Initiative – San Angelo Region & The Laura W. Bush Institute for Women’s Health is Thursday, March 1  from 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at the Region XV Education Service Center, 612 S. Irene St.

This year's theme:  Food for Today, Food for Tomorrow, Food for a Lifetime

9:00 – 9:20 Registration

9:20 –9:30  Welcome – Mary Herbert (THI) and Linda Ross (LWBIWH) Mayor, Brenda Gunter 

9:30 – 10:30 Keynote Speaker – Eric Cooper, President and CEO of San Antonio Food Bank speaking about the theme “Food for Today, Food for Tomorrow, Food for a Lifetime.”  The San Antonio Food Bank is the largest hunger-relief organization in Southwest Texas. Through a network of more than 530 nonprofit agencies and a myriad of distribution programs, the San Antonio Food Bank provides more than 61 million pounds of food and grocery items to needy Texans in a 16 county service area.

10:45 - 11:45 Community networking: Led by Eric Cooper

Brainstorming by communities about what the strengths and barriers are in their communities concerning Food for today, Food for tomorrow and Food for a lifetime.

11:45 – 1:00   Lunch and Cooking Demonstration by Texas AgriLife

Updates on the Tom Green County Hunger Coalition Task Groups:  Community Gardens, Senior Hunger, Resource Guide, and Faith-Based Initiatives

1:15 – 2:30 Panel: Hidden Areas of Hunger - College Students, Seniors Adults, Homeless, and Military

                Featuring Photography exhibit “Sin Hogar” – Faces of Homelessness by James Hall

2:30 – 2:45 Break (Network)

2:45 – 4:00 Keynote Speaker: Jimmy Dorrell, Founder and President of Mission Waco, an organization that has established many programs and ministries for the marginalized population in Waco and beyond.  Some of those programs are the World Cup Café, the Church under the Bridge, Urban R.E.A.P. (renewable energy and agriculture project), and a neighborhood full service grocery store replacing a food desert.
