SAN ANGELO – At this morning’s training session on the topic, Addressing Opioid Overdose: Understanding the Role of Prevention, Mitchell Moore, a trainer for Prevention Training Services, spoke with Conexión and briefly outlined one particular area---misuse and overdose of Opioids. Moore, a Licensed Chemical Dependency Counselor, has been a trainer for 20 years.

“We’re looking at preventing opioid misuse and overdose.” Opioids are commonly used for pain so if you have dental surgery then you are going to have a prescription of Opioids when you leave the hospital” said Moore.

Opioid is defined as: “Class drugs that includes heroin and prescription pain relievers. Common types of Opioids include: oxycodone (OxyContin), hydrocodone (Vicodin), morphine, fentanyl and methadone,” per the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

“The Center for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that Opioids are used for about three days, post-surgery. However, a lot of prescriptions are for 30 days or 45 days so there could be a lot of misuse or abuse in the Opioids for chronic pain,” said Moore.

The second area he addressed was to prevent overdoses. ‘Across the country, Naloxone kits are being given out to law enforcement and First Responders so that when they come upon someone who has utilized too much heroin or too much Opioid pain pills, the Naloxone can help save them from death due to overdose,” concluded Moore.

The all-day session was held in MHMR of the Concho Valley’s Jack Ray Auditorium.

Prior to the start of the session, Moore gave out a pre-test on 10 questions, two of which consisted as follows.

1. The opioids that are currently being used to contribute to the overdose crisis are:

a) Commonly prescribed opioids

b) Other synthetic opioids

c) Heroin

d) All of the above

7. Which factor increases a person’s risk for opioid overdose?

a) Experience one (or more) non-fatal opioid overdose (s)

b) Using opioids to manage acute pain only

The answer to the first question is D while the answer to question seven was A.
