SAN ANGELO – 35 years ago, National Travel and Tourism Week was proclaimed to “recognize the accommodations, the attractions, the restaurants, the retail establishments, the airlines, all of those industries that bring in and help serve with the quality of life, not only for citizens but visitors when they come to our community,” stated Diann Bayes, Vice President of the San Angelo Convention and Visitors Bureau.

Bayes, the guest speaker at the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce Luncheon which was held at the Fort Concho Stables, included in her power point presentation that showed, Texas Travel Facts National Travel Tourism Week (#NTTW18)--Texas jobs are directly supported by travel spending. “To give you an idea of what the power of [tourists’] travel is to our community, those sales tax goes into the industry and into the City,” said Bayes.

Bayes was asked what did the 1 of 3,100 button represent.

“The buttons we are wearing we are handing out to those who are in our industry of which there are more than 3100 employees that are in the travel/ tourism industry.” “If not for travelers who come to our community, we would lose $178 million dollars in travel spending.” “Without travel and tourism to San Angelo along with the spending the visitor does, each household would have to pay an additional $379 dollars in taxes per year.”

The more visitors come, the more they spend, the longer they stay, the higher that number goes up, the more citizens save money, concluded Bayes.
