SAN ANGELO– In Tuesday evening’s opening 46th annual Elks City Wide Hoop Shot contest, the leader of the pack in the eight and nine-year-old boys category, was sharp-shooter, Trey Allen. Allen stepped up to the line and made 7 out of 10 shots in the early first round.

After Trey finished his first round, Conexión interviewed his coach, Michael Bejil who said this eight-year-old “gym rat” has been with him the past three years. 

“On free throws we have worked with him every year that he has been with us.” “When we got ready for the Hoop Shoot, we worked with him a little longer,” said Coach Bejil, who coaches the Boys Club/ Girls Club of San Angelo Bulls team. 

All the hard work paid off as Trey looked comfortable and confident at the free throw line.

Lea Gibson, age 10, was the winner in the girls basketball, category.

Coordinator, Chris Stansbury reported that this year’s City-Wide Elks Hoop Shoot Contest had 18 participants.  The 8 to 9-year-old girls’ winner was Kashlyn Townsend.  In the 8 to 9-year-old boys’ category, the winner was Jalel Lazano.  Lea Gibson was the winner in the girls’ 10 to 11-year-old category.

As for the winner of the 10 to 11-year-old boys, Izaiah Allen was the winner.  And in the 12 to13-year-old girls’ division, Alyssa Espinoza was the winner.

One boy and one girl from each age group will advance to the district tournament in San Antonio in late January. The Elks will help the travel expenses for this trip. Winners from the district contest will advance to the state contest in Dallas. State winners will advance to the regional contest, and those winners will advance to the National contest in Chicago in late April, stated Harry Thomas, first vice president of the Elks Lodge.

Elks Lodge # 1880 held this year’s Hoop Shoot at the South Side Boys & Girls Club gym, 2762 Ben Ficklin Road.
