SAN ANGELO – When the five newest members from the Class of 2025 San Angelo Fire Department were about to take the oath of office from Fire Chief, Patrick Brody, he referred to them as “Guardians of the Galaxy.”
Interestingly, “Guardians of the Galaxy” and A firefighter’s prayer have a common, kinsman bond. “Guardians is a metaphor that means, “To allow yourself to care for people in the face of devasting loss.”
The firefighters’ prayer reads. "I want to fill my calling to give the best in me, to guard my every neighbor and protect their property."
Among Fire Chief Brody’s remarks, he mentioned that after 16 months of intense training, these “Guardians” began a new journey characterized by “bravery, selflessness, and an unwavering dedication.”
When San Angelo Mayor Brenda Gunter spoke, she stated the firefighter’s job is not an easy task. It is a very difficult thing. “People don’t understand the level of work that goes to become a firefighter. The firefighters can’t do it [this profession] if they don’t have the support of their family or friends,” said Gunter.
Travis Hunter, Emergency Medical Services Coordinator told the attendees, the goal of the Paramedic Program was to produce competent, entry level paramedics. The fab five started with EMT courses in March comprised of 240 hours, followed by paramedic training which totaled 1300 hours. This was a two-and-half- year program that was condensed into11-months. “In order to be successful in this profession, you will have to continually learn updated information.” Hunter also told the family members their sacrifice, and dedication played a huge part in the lives of their husband or son’s success.
Fire Chief Patrick Brody then conducted the oath of office to the first firefighter, Nathaniel J. Fedor who was pinned by his mother, Roxie Whigham.
Chief Brody followed up the oath with the second member, Bryson L. Smith who was pinned by his wife, Miami Smith.
Nicolas P. Hastings the third firefighter was pinned by his mother, Jenifer Garcia. Conexión asked Hastings at what point in his life did he decide he wanted a career as a firefighter? “It was my junior year in high school.”
The fourth newly sworn in firefighter, Dillon W. McAlister was pinned by his wife, Kali.
The last fab five-member, Bryson C. McNutt was pinned by his wife, Gracie.
The San Angelo Fire Department on Friday, February 7, 2025 recognized its newest five firefighters at a graduation ceremony held in the East Mezzanine of City Hall, 72 West College Avenue.
