SAN ANGELO – Shortly after 1:15 p.m., SkyWest’s commercial flight from George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston (IAH) touched down at San Angelo Regional Airport – Mathis Field (SJT).
The significance of this inaugural flight was two-fold. First, passengers no longer have to take a flight from SJT to Dallas. Second, the purest form of economic development is tourism.
“This opens up not only for our leisure tourism market, but also when associations hold their educational seminars here. This in turn opens up a gateway for travelers wanting to fly into and out of Houston” said Diann Bayes, Vice President of the San Angelo Convention and Visitors Bureau. “We needed a flight from San Angelo to Houston, and Houston to San Angelo” said Mayor Brenda Gunter to a well-represented group of attendees. This was the No. 1 project that the citizens had made loud and clear to the San Angelo City Council. Mayor Gunter made sure she let them know that today it finally happened on April 21, 2021.
