SAN ANGELO – When it comes to making a great film, there has to be a great director, a well-crafted, script, excellent chemistry among a talented group of actors cast by someone behind the scenes to be considered successful, and great.
In the case of the film, “Losing Lao,” which was made locally in San Angelo, it has all the makings of being great because behind the camera was the multi-award-winning writer, and director Cedric Thomas Smith. Smith added to his already numerous awards such as the Concho Creator Award when he competed against 50 other indie filmmakers at the third annual San Angelo REVOLUTION Film Festival, held September 30-October 1, 2022.
The great chemistry took place between actors: Johnny Rey Díaz, Marvin Ritchie, Erik Anderson, former San Angeloan, and Angelo State University student, Alyssia Rivera, and Patty Corres all wonderfully cast by Calvin J. Walker. award-winning Latino actor and filmmaker based in Los Angeles, Johnny Rey Diaz, Diaz is currently a series regular on Amazon's newest single-cam comedy, "PRIMO," produced by New York Times best-selling author Shea Serrano and Michael Schur, per a press release. Two other cast members, Christine Longoria, and Javier Medellin were not available when a 10 a.m. press conference was held on Tuesday, June 13, 2023 at the San Angelo Visitor’s Center.
The 30-minute film explores family and combat brothers grieving over the loss of a veteran due to mental health struggle. “We understood the assignment, which is telling a story that is bigger than us,” said Smith previously on his Instagram account.
